Useful Information on Spay and Neuter

Here are some facts about pets. Also some important and useful information.

People like us, who spend most of our “free” time rescuing homeless dogs, always offer one big reason for spaying or neutering your dog: the appalling pet overpopulation problem that results in thousands of pets being euthanized (killed) every day.

  • Some 70,000 puppies and kittens are born every day in the U.S.

  • Between four million and six million pets are euthanized every year because they are homeless.

  • That means between 11,000 and 16,000 pets are euthanized every day simply because they are homeless.

  • An animal in a shelter is killed every 1.5 seconds.

  • Only one animal in 10 born in the U.S. gets a good home that lasts a lifetime.

Millions of unwanted and homeless cats* are born in our country each year. During the peak of the kitten season (from late April to early September), pounds and "shelters" kill unwanted and abandoned cats* at the rate of ONE PER MINUTE.

TWO UNCONTROLLED BREEDING CATS*
... plus all their kittens
... and all their kittens' kittens' kittens
(if none are ever neutered or spayed)
WILL ADD UP TO:
Year One: 12 Cats
Year Two: 66 Cats
Year Three: 382 Cats
Year Four: 2,201 Cats
Year Five: 12,680 Cats
Year Six: 73,041 Cats
Year Seven: 420,715 Cats
Year Eight: 2,423,316 Cats
Year Nine: 13,958,290 Cats
Year Ten: 80,399,780 Cats
Population Figures in this table are based on:
• an average of 2 litters of kittens per year;
• an average of 2.8 surviving kittens per litter;
• an average 10-year breeding life.
